4. Project Overview

4.1 Initial Focus: Namibia as MVP Launch Region

BlocNav will launch its Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in Namibia, a country well-suited for focused testing and iteration. While many parts of Namibia are already partially mapped, there are still significant gaps—particularly in informal settlements, rural areas, and fast-growing urban zones.

Namibia was selected for its:

  • Incomplete but emerging mapping infrastructure – Ideal for demonstrating value quickly

  • Expanding road and utility networks – Creating ongoing demand for up-to-date spatial data

  • Strong potential for local partnerships – Opportunities to work with schools, NGOs, and civic groups

  • Stable connectivity and mobile device access – Making mobile-first data collection feasible

Launching in a manageable and low-risk region allows BlocNav to prioritize quality, build trust, and iterate quickly. By starting in a specific, focused geography, BlocNav can refine its tools, workflows, and contributor experience before scaling to other underserved areas across Africa.

Expansion Plan: Phase 2 and Beyond

Following a successful MVP deployment in Namibia, BlocNav will expand to additional regions with greater population density, urban complexity, and institutional demand for mapping solutions.

Target Phase 2 countries include:

  • Ghana – A digitally progressive country with strong open data communities, urban-rural mapping gaps, and high demand for infrastructure planning tools

  • Rwanda – Known for its government-led tech initiatives, Rwanda offers strong potential for public-private partnerships and rapid scalability

  • Kenya – Home to a vibrant civic tech scene and growing cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya is a natural fit for field testing, data collection, and user engagement at scale

These expansions will build on the systems and learnings from the Namibia MVP, while adapting to local contexts and opportunities.

4.2 Community-Driven Field Collection

At the heart of BlocNav’s model is a community-powered system for capturing raw geospatial data. Rather than relying solely on editing existing maps, BlocNav enables local contributors to build accurate, ground-truthed maps from the bottom up—using the tools they already have.

Through a lightweight, mobile-first app, contributors can capture and submit:

  • Points of Interest (POIs) – including schools, clinics, shops, public facilities, and other landmarks

  • Infrastructure features – such as new roads, construction zones, and footpaths

  • Geotagged photos – offering visual context and validation for each feature

  • GPS traces and observations – to map informal settlements, address gaps, and real-world navigation details

  • Field notes and tags – including local names, accessibility info, or informal descriptions

The mobile app supports offline functionality, allowing contributors to work in disconnected areas and sync their data once connected. This raw data becomes the foundation of the BlocNav map.

All submissions go through a human-centric validation process, where trusted reviewers or high-reputation contributors check for accuracy and context before approving additions to the map.

Instead of launching with cryptocurrency rewards, contributors will earn:

  • Reputation points

  • Badges and public recognition

  • Priority access to verified datasets and tools

  • (Optional token rewards may be introduced in later phases)

Assisted Validation with AI (Future Enhancement)

As the platform scales, AI tools will be introduced to assist—not replace—human validation. Early use cases include:

  • Flagging anomalies or possible errors

  • Suggesting POI types based on photo/image recognition

  • Prioritizing review queues based on data confidence and impact

  • Detecting duplicate or outdated features

All AI-assisted suggestions will be subject to human review, ensuring that accuracy, context, and local insight remain at the core of BlocNav’s mapping process.

4.3 Simplified Technology Stack

For its MVP, BlocNav intentionally avoids complexity in favor of speed, usability, and data quality. The technology stack includes:

  • Mobile Contributor App Lightweight and designed for offline data collection, GPS tagging, and image capture

  • Centralized Spatial Database (PostGIS) Robust and scalable backend to store contributions, validation history, and metadata

  • Human Validation Dashboard Admin interface for reviewing, approving, and correcting contributed data

  • Contributor Reputation System Tracks accuracy over time to build trust and assign additional privileges

This approach ensures that BlocNav can quickly deploy, iterate, and grow with real community feedback—without needing blockchain, AI, or drone infrastructure upfront. These advanced technologies remain part of the long-term roadmap, to be introduced once the platform is stable and community-tested.
