3. Market Opportunity

Africa is undergoing rapid urbanization and digital transformation, making accurate and reliable mapping services more essential than ever. By 2050, Africa’s urban population is expected to double, with cities expanding at an unprecedented pace (UN-Habitat, 2023). At the same time, smartphone penetration in Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to reach 66% by 2025, enabling broader access to mobile-first mapping tools (GSMA, 2022).
Governments, NGOs, and private sector organizations increasingly depend on geospatial data for infrastructure development, logistics, disaster response, and public service delivery. However, existing platforms often fall short—offering limited coverage, outdated data, and little visibility into informal or rural regions.
The global geospatial analytics market is forecast to reach $209 billion by 2030, reflecting a growing global reliance on location intelligence (Allied Market Research, 2023). Yet across much of Africa, basic map infrastructure is still missing. A 2020 UNICEF report found that 60% of schools and health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa had inaccurate or missing map data, directly undermining aid efforts, planning, and resource delivery (UNICEF, 2020).
At the same time, the African Development Bank estimates that between $130 billion and $170 billion in infrastructure investment is needed annually across the continent (AfDB, 2022). Without trustworthy geospatial data, these investments risk inefficiency and misallocation.
BlocNav is uniquely positioned to address this challenge. By enabling community members to collect and validate mapping data through a mobile-first, human-centered platform, BlocNav bridges the gap between local knowledge and global infrastructure needs. This approach unlocks economic value while supporting inclusive development and empowering the very communities that contribute to the map.
